I’ve worked in data in one form or another for ~20 years including work as a business analyst, developer/warehouse analyst, business intelligence analyst, data engineer, lead data analysis trainer, etc.

I originally started with GA teaching SQL workshops at their Atlanta campus and it grew into other data related workshops/bootcamps and being a Data Analytics Online and Atlanta instructor. When I was offered a role teaching courses in my GA field I was happy to be able to share my knowledge with others who want to learn this industry.
What Is Business Intelligence?
Business intelligence (BI) combines strategies, processes, and technologies that focus on data. BI includes common functions such as data mining, process analysis, data visualization and analytics, performance management, predictive/decisional analysis, reporting and dashboards. BI can have members such as visualization and data analysts, data engineers, business intelligence analysts, and data scientists.
Can you give us an example of a problem/question a BI Analyst might be asked to solve on the job?
The role of a Business Intelligence Analyst varies by company, but the top questions are usually about KPIs. How does the company work? What are the trademarks? A BI analyst will take a top-down approach to answering those questions. Let’s say my company’s sales are down, for example. A BI Analyst will be tasked with determining whether that decline is from a specific location, a specific product/service, a specific vendor, etc.
Typically, BI Analysts work to make sure data is ready for use from sources and work with other roles such as Database Administrators and Data Engineers. Data Analysts work closely with customers (internal and external) to meet their data needs and collaborate with BI analysts. Many times these roles are actually combined. How To Become A Business Intelligence Analyst & Get Hired
Anyone who wants to get into BI should have both technical and non-technical knowledge and skills. This list is not exhaustive, but highlights a few that will serve the analyst well.
You don’t have to come from a technical background, but you are willing to learn the technical side of the job. Having a business background is really helpful as it can help understand business problems, understand the business itself, and build stakeholder profiles. This helps to ask the right questions to understand the needs of the business. Technical knowledge is useful in this field because you can borrow the details of what can be delivered. As you dive deeper from the role of Data Analyst to the role of BI Analyst and the blending that occurs between the two, more technical skills such as SQL will be required. I would recommend anyone in a data-driven role to have a solid knowledge of Excel, SQL, and a visualization tool like Tableau.

Before bootcamps, how did you become a BI analyst? Is Business Intelligence a skill set that can be learned in a bootcamp? Why?
I personally didn’t get a data science degree, but instead learned on the job throughout my career and actually taught myself SQL. I finally got my Masters in Computer Information Systems, but that’s not necessary for a business intelligence job! In the General Assembly’s Data Analytics Bootcamp, we taught not only the tools, but also how to formulate a hypothesis and work through the evaluation process. Students create an Excel project, then an SQL project, and finally a Tableau project.
You can learn different tools and methods of Business Intelligence in different programs such as General Assembly or micro masters offered by various colleges (these are longer in length). There are “boot camp programs” but they are usually more than a 1 day session. There are also full degree programs in data analysis.
Depending on the interest rate, background, financial obligations, etc. boot camp is a launching pad for a data/BI career. This is a career path where we are constantly learning and acquiring new skills.

BI analysts can work in everything from a startup to a large corporation. Often, you find Business Intelligence teams within large-sized companies.
BI applies to many business areas depending on the organization. BI should generally help deliver information to help the organization achieve its goals. To do this BI needs to collaborate with both IT departments and business departments.
There are many additional certifications that can be earned including the Certified Business Intelligence Professional – CBIP. Here is a list of certifications from CIO.com that may be of interest.
I would start with a program like the General Assembly Data Analytics Course. This is a good starting point for this type of career path. There are more places to learn about data analysis like Data Camp, Coursera, Udemy, etc. Here is a list of additional programs:
